Artist Statement

Gineke’s interdisciplinary training combines in-depth knowledge of histories of music, contemporary music practices and free improvisation with a strong foundation in directing and a powerful aesthetic language. Their work includes play developments and experimental music theater. Gineke also creates multimedia installations and writes pieces for soundworks and stage. Early on in their career, Gineke established an artistic focus on vocal expression and voice. The exploration of the sonic and musical potential of speech and narration runs like a red thread to their diverse body of work.

Gineke’s approach to scenic musicality and narration is guided by the principles of polyphony. In their texts, Gineke brings together various materials - from biographical and historical documents to fiction and poetry. Polyphony is also evident in their directorial style, often through simultaneity and complex, multi-focal actions.

Gineke often works with a minimalist stage aesthetic that emphasizes the tension between presence and absence, the imaginary and the actual.

In addition to their staging practice, Gineke also works as a dramaturge, supporting other theatermakers, musicians and orchestras in developing and realising new ideas.

Bio

Trained as a musician, Gineke Pranger studied historical performance practice and instrumental play at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Driven by the desire to expand their artistic expression across other disciplines, Gineke began a bachelor’s degree in Directing for Drama and Opera in 2016 at the Theaterakademie August Everding, learning from directors such as Sebastian Baumgarten and Christiane Pohle. In 2021 Gineke attained their masters’ degree from this institution and began working as a resident director at Theater Pfütze in Nürnberg, creating several musictheater pieces for young audiences.
